Framing of standards discussion
• David M. : Standards are evolving rapidly. Sees this committee as ongoing beyond the life of writing a tech plan. The committee will oversee implementation after submission of plan.
• John W. expressed desire to make this a viable document with bearing beyond securing funding.
• Discussion of building autonomy vs. standards. John W. “defined autonomy” –if committee could describe the standard, buildings could add on at their own expense.
• Alan Degner: We could accomplish a lot if we could be talking to one another. What is the venue for sharing information?
• Tom Milliron—site administrator’s role is setting priorities. Need to understand district priorities. Also seconds Alan’s sense that this committee should function to keep individual sites from “reinventing the wheel.”
• Tom McK. When we get to staff development as part of Tech Plan, what are venues within the district network for staff to collaborate.
• Richard Steele on tech plan: what about simple structure: as it is now, as we’d like it to be, what we’ll do to make it happen. Plan for the network vs. desktop envts, assuming that we might be able to fund for teachers’ laptop purchases.
• Richard speaks on history of having a technology coordinator mentioning that that person would have handled all of these communication issues. How come we don’t have a technology coordinator and will we ever?
• LeeAnn mentions that hiring lab supervisors under IT might help standardize infrastructures. Tom Milliorn expressed concern that principals might lose control over staffing obligations.
• In response to Richard, David Means suggests that the committee could recommend re-instating the position of technology coordinator.
• Richard asked, “Is there a line item for technology?” David: “No.”
• John Wahl suggested that we seek Board approval for the recommendations made by the committee.

Scheduling-- Next meeting of Committee of the Whole Oct 9. at 4:15 at DZ C .207

We discussed the schedule. We could continue our monthly meetings, but if there’s a product we’ll need release time. 1st Tuesdays.

We will meet on the first Tuesdays of the month at DZ, so for the rest of the year that will be November 6, December 4th, [no January meeting scheduled, this is probably when we’ll need our half or full-day release to work on the tech plan and other issues. Perhaps Jan 15th would be a good day for this] Feb. 5, March 4, April 1 [what fools we are], and May 6. We discussed release time and David Means said that it’s possible to obtain sub support for meetings where we have “heavy lifting.” We spent the meeting time first of all identifying topics into which the tech committee’s WIKI can be organized. Those topics will be forwarded to John Wahl and then the committee is respectfully asked to expound on the topics. We brainstormed a long list of topics and then established topic areas. The url for the Tech Committee is http://jsdtechnologycommittee.wikispaces.com/
Those topics are listed below¬–

Davis Means showed us the current technology plan and also the areas where they need help. We decided to use the Wiki topics as organizers for the District’s tech plan (beyond the required boilerplate).
